4WD Basics – FWPCOT3325 Operate Four Wheel Drive Vehicle on Unsealed Roads

Our nationally recognised 4WD Basics course (FWPCOT3325) is designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to safely operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on unsealed roads and varying terrain.

Delivered by experienced instructors with backgrounds in operational driver training and four-wheel-drive operations, the course focuses on understanding vehicle capabilities, limitations and safe driving techniques.

Key training areas include:

  • Four-wheel-drive systems, driveline operation and traction management.

  • Vehicle dynamics, stability and weight transfer.

  • Terrain assessment, hazard identification and route selection.

  • Safe driving techniques on gravel roads, corrugations, inclines and uneven terrain.

  • Tyre pressures, vehicle preparation and pre-departure inspections.

  • Correct use of four-wheel-drive systems, differential locks and electronic traction aids.

  • Basic recovery awareness and risk management.

Our practical, hands-on training goes beyond simply teaching driving techniques. Participants develop an understanding of why techniques work, enabling them to make informed decisions, maximise vehicle capability and minimise the risk of injury or equipment damage.
