Become a 4WD Recovery professional

Four-Wheel Drive Recovery Course

Our Four-Wheel Drive Recovery Course goes well beyond the recovery techniques commonly discussed within the recreational 4WD community. Participants develop a deeper understanding of recovery forces, equipment limitations and the planning required to make vehicle recovery genuinely safe.

This practical course teaches you how to assess complex recovery situations, calculate anticipated recovery loads and apply appropriate safety factors to protect people, vehicles and equipment. Rather than relying on guesswork, habit or internet advice, participants learn how to develop a controlled recovery plan based on the vehicle’s position, terrain resistance, equipment ratings and the forces generated during the recovery.

complex winching training and skills

Training includes:

  • Recovery-site assessment and hazard identification

  • Calculating vehicle and terrain resistance

  • Estimating recovery loads and total system forces

  • Applying appropriate safety factors

  • Understanding working load limits and equipment ratings

  • Selecting compatible, correctly rated recovery equipment

  • Establishing exclusion zones and safe operating procedures

  • Identifying suitable vehicle recovery points

  • Traction-board, tow and kinetic-rope recoveries

  • Safe winch setup and operation

  • Single-line and double-line winch recoveries

  • Mechanical advantage and load reduction

  • Directional and redirected recoveries

  • Complex off-angle and multi-stage recovery planning

  • Safe use of shackles, pulleys, recovery dampers and winch extensions

  • Communication and coordination between drivers, spotters and recovery personnel

  • Post-recovery equipment inspection and reporting

  • Realistic scenario-based recovery exercises

Participants learn to recognise when a proposed recovery system may be overloaded, how individual components affect the capacity of the complete system and how poor equipment selection or positioning can place people at risk.

The course is suitable for recreational four-wheel drivers, workplace teams, government agencies, land-management personnel, utilities, emergency services and anyone required to recover vehicles in remote or difficult environments.

Participants are encouraged to bring the recovery equipment they normally carry so it can be inspected and discussed during the course. Additional rated recovery and winching equipment will be supplied by the trainers where required. Participants should bring or have access to:

  • A registered and roadworthy four-wheel-drive vehicle

  • An operational electric or PTO winch

  • Ideally, rated front and rear recovery points fitted to their vehicle

  • Vehicle recovery equipment appropriate to their four-wheel drive

  • Winching equipment, including a controller and recovery damper

  • Recovery boards such as MAXTRAX

  • A suitable shovel

  • Protective recovery gloves

  • Enclosed footwear and clothing suitable for outdoor practical activities

  • Sun protection, drinking water and food for the day

Recommended Experience

Participants should have some previous four-wheel-drive experience and be comfortable operating their vehicle on unsealed roads and off-road terrain.

Completion of a basic four-wheel-drive course—preferably FWPCOT3325 Operate four-wheel drive vehicle on unsealed roads or an equivalent course—is strongly recommended before undertaking recovery training.

Participants who are unsure whether their vehicle, equipment or previous experience is suitable should contact us before booking.
